Abortion
A regulated medical procedure
Content reviewed by Dr. Laporte, Medical Director, Morgentaler ClinicAbortion is a medical procedure that allows for the safe and professional termination of a pregnancy. Supervised by healthcare specialists, this intervention is performed under optimal safety conditions to ensure the physical and psychological well-being of the individual concerned.
Each decision is made in consultation with the medical team, who provides all the necessary information for an informed choice.

Pregnancy test to do at home 4 weeks after the abortion.
- Abortion is a simple and safe medical procedure that ends a pregnancy.
- Abortion is normal, common, and an integral part of reproductive healthcare.
- There are two methods: medical abortion and instrumental abortion (sometimes called surgical abortion).
- Abortion at our clinic generally requires only one visit.
At the Morgentaler Clinic, we offer abortion services up to 16 weeks of pregnancy. The length of pregnancy is calculated from the date of your last menstrual period. An ultrasound is performed on-site the day of your appointment to confirm this duration.
- Medical abortion: possible up to the end of the 9th week.
- Surgical abortion: possible up to 16 weeks. After 14 weeks, two appointments are necessary.
If your pregnancy exceeds 16 weeks, we can refer you to another abortion center. Additionally, depending on availability, we may refer you to another center at the time of booking your appointment.
Although we are a private clinic, abortion is covered by the Quebec health insurance card (RAMQ) and by the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP). It is therefore free for anyone covered by RAMQ.
If you do not have either of these coverages, fees will apply and will be discussed when you book your appointment.
- Instrumental abortion has a 99% success rate.
- Medical abortion has a success rate of about 95%.
- In case of incomplete abortion, an evaluation is necessary.
Abortion is not linked to infertility. It is even possible to become pregnant again 2 weeks after the abortion.
